Marvel’s highly weaponized fan favorite returns in Netflix’s violent series The Punisher (streaming Friday), and while former Marine Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal, The Walking Dead) ran into Hell’s Kitchen’s resident blind vigilante in the second season of Daredevil, he contends with fewer guys in tights this time around.
After dealing with those responsible for the deaths of his wife and children, the Punisher has a hard time moving on. He's still haunted by the tragedy, is a target of Homeland Security and teams with an off-the-grid hacker named David Lieberman, aka Micro (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), as a past mission in Kandahar causes new problems for Frank.

Bernthal doesn’t try to lionize Punisher. “I’m not interested in creating a hero or a villain here. What I’m interested in is empathizing for him. He’s in my heart, he’s in my bones, I feel for what he’s gone through and I respect him.”
USA TODAY caught up with Bernthal to talk about the first season of Punisher and his upcoming big-screen project, director Damien Chazelle’s Space Race drama First Man.
How has Frank changed since Daredevil?
That Frank Castle was very much a man unhinged: find the people who took his family from him and deal with them in the way he does. The question that has been posed for Punisher is what do you do next? One thing I’ve found very common in people who have gone through unbelievable trauma in combat is (that) while on a mission, you have purpose, you understand what’s going on, but often, when the mission’s over is when the war inside begins.

What have you learned about yourself as an actor by playing the Punisher?
Before anything else, I’m a father and a husband, and I love my family with every fiber of my being. They make me a better person, and I would happily give my life for them. What do you like about the Frank/Micro dynamic?
You take a guy like Frank Castle and having relationships is not tactically smart for him. He’s not looking for a light at the end of the tunnel or trying to expand his social life. He’s really resigned to the fact that he’s going to live in a world of darkness, and he doesn’t want out of it. To be forced to live with this guy and eventually start caring about him and his family, it’s going against everything his code stands for. That conflict can be really interesting.

I don’t know, man. I’m a big fan of Krysten Ritter and what she’s done (with Jessica Jones). I think that would be really great. Just as long as the writing’s right, I’d want to play him in any situation.
